AMERICORPS – (KAP) Ketchikan Afterschool Program
In- School and Summer Outdoors
The Ketchikan Afterschool Program (KAP) is a new island-wide initiative whose goal is to establish or support afterschool programs that are open to all youth grades 5th-8th. KAP is a free, nonprofit program dedicated to enhancing resiliency, building protective factors, providing SAFE activities, teaching healthy lifestyles, and fostering positive youth development. KAP works with partner organizations to enhance or provide activities in schools. Under the auspices of the parent organization, Residential Youth Care, Inc., the KAP Director oversees members, employees, and local volunteers in providing free services that are open to local students in or near their schools. KAP offers fun, enriching, active, and healthy options for kids, during and after school hours. KAP offers youth healthy snacks, and engaging physical fitness activity, a choice of three activities a day, including STEM activities, arts, student clubs, outdoor education, and athletic options. Youth are also exposed to bi-weekly lessons discussing healthy lifestyles and marijuana education. Members can teach youth tobacco prevention lessons directly to youth in schools and lead youth volunteers in support of local events such as health fairs, summits, tournaments, art shows and substance mis-use events offered by local coalitions. During the summer, KAP runs a 10-week youth enrichment camp which includes activities such as hiking, kayaking, fishing, and shelter building, all within a framework of outdoor education. Outdoor sports as well as indoor activities are offered, including music, drama, art, service and STEM projects. Finally, KAP focuses on family and community engagement – providing free parenting classes, parent nights, open house events, and other special events for youth, families, and the community throughout the year.
Member Duties : AmeriCorps members work directly with youth to provide a safe, responsible, well-supervised afterschool program. Members are responsible for preparing materials and supplies and planning and implementing activities, workshops, clinics, events, and family-focused parent/family opportunities. Members are responsible for an engaging and creative learning environment and establishing a positive rapport with parents, collaborators, school management, and community partners. Members are responsible for understanding and abiding by school district rules and requirements. Members serve as positive adult role model for children in the program through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and courtesy. Members maintain cleanliness in all program areas; assist with the setup and breakdown during the program day in an effort to keep the site(s) clean and orderly. Members may be assigned additional duties, including helping school district classrooms and clubs, partner organization events or RYC..
Job Requirements:
· High School Diploma or GED required.
· Ability to speak and write Standard English appropriate in a public school setting
· Ability to lead and supervise small and large groups by recognizing potential issues and applying established KYI, KGBSD, and RYC procedures and problem solving methods as needed.
· Ability to observe youth behavior, asses its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior management techniques, positive redirection, or appropriate corrective action as necessary to support youth in making positive behavior choices.
· Accurately completes and submits time cards, incident reports, rosters, receipts, and other program related materials in accordance with RYC policy.
· Identify student needs and communicate to KAP Director.
· Assists KAP Director in scheduling community partners, workshops, clinics, events, and activities relevant to the program.
· Evaluates the program daily to suggest improvement, needs, hazards and/or trends to KAP Director for further evaluation.
· Observes youth daily to check for bruises, cuts, scrapes, rashes, or other indications of injury or illness to report to KAP Director for further evaluation.
· Sets a positive example in food selection, exercise, personal habits, and attitudes.
· Responsible for designated youth at each site(s) for duration of program or until replacement KAP Coordinator or KAP
Director arrive – never leave a group unsupervised.
· Responsible for immediately reporting and documenting any and all injuries or incidents utilizing established RYC, KYI, and KGBSD procedures for notification to the KAP Director and parents.
· Demonstrate reliability and punctuality by arriving on-time for scheduled shift.
· Attendance and participation at all required staff meetings, trainings, and development activities.
• Valid Drivers License and clean driving record
• Basic knowledge of office equipment and computers, including word processing and email
• Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR and MANDT certification following hire
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· This position requires a person who can work with many distractions, interruptions and still accomplish their objectives and meet established deadlines. Resource and equipment management are integral components to make the position successful. · KAP Coordinator is expected to wear appropriate, professional work attire at all times.
OTHER SKILLS:
· Ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, sit, crouch, bend, speak, and hear.
· Ability to engage in physical activity with members without limitation.
· Ability to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects between 10 and 20 pounds.
· Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff, public officials, private sector officials, parents, and community leaders.
· Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate sensitivity with others.
·
· Knowledge of developmental needs of school age children, particularly 5th- 8th grade.
· Ability to manage and supervise large groups.

Shift: Varies – Flexible Afternoon Schedules
Monthly Stipend: $1,650, relocation up to $600
Benefits include Health Insurance and Education Award up to $6,195 upon successful completion of service.
